Avatar Institute of Learning

The Inspiration
The Avatar Institute of Learning is a new Private Training Establishment.  It has been set up as a result of the experience and inspiration of the directors and key personnel.  They have extensive backgrounds operating a retirement village, rest home, hospital, and in the fire and safety field.

They have perceived a need for training to further the potential of young people and workers, which will also increase the skill base for the above industries and for our community.  And they have seen that they have a matching capability to initiate suitable training.

A Tried and True Team
The directors and managers form the core guiding and operating group.  We all work together successfully operating the Maida Vale Retirement Village, the associated Mountain View Rest home, and the Woodrow Grove Hospital.

Pat and Edd Wynd, the directors, have operated rest homes since 1986, and are very familiar with the needs of the elderly and of the industry as a whole.  They took over Maida Vale in April 2000.

Avatar Institute of Learning gained accreditation for several NQF domains in mid May 2005, allowing delivery of training in the fire and safety field and support of the older person course.  These courses have commenced by qualified tutors.  The support of the older person course has now expired and new courses are currently at NZQA for approval. We hope to begin teaching the new courses by July 2009.

Pat and the Managers form the Management Team who provides the day-to-day coordination of Avatar operations.  They are backed by staff, outside specialists and two advisory groups.  These are the Senior Care Advisory Group and the Fire/Safety Advisory Group which provides guidance and support based on extensive industry knowledge.

Companion Planting
Our main teaching facilities are based at the Mountain View Rest home, in the grounds of the Maida Vale Retirement Village, which also has Woodrow Grove Hospital on the same site.  The whole complex is generally referred to as Maida Vale.

Maida Vale and the Avatar Institute of Learning are independent, but provide positive support for each other.  They have some common staff and the same ownership, and Maida Vale will accommodate the training courses.  Both organisations are designed to serve the community, and the goals are linked. The training envisaged will serve a far wider community and students could conveniently live and work anywhere in Taranaki.

The Avatar Institute of Learning plans to apply the same high standards in the training field, and looks forward to continuing this record of excellence already recognised for its older sister organisation.
